How to Dive on a Budget: Getting the Most Out of Your Gear, Air, and Trips
Try as we might, we can’t deny it. Scuba diving is an expensive hobby. But with a little strategy, you can make it more affordable without compromising on quality or safety. Whether you're looking to get more dives in, upgrade your gear without breaking the bank, or you’re planning a dive getaway, here’s how to get more bang for your diving buck.
Plan Budget-Friendly Dive Trips
Local dive trips often provide the best value, especially when bundled with transportation, air fills, and a guide. Our day trips and multi-day trips are all-inclusive, covering ferry fares to places like Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast, making them an easy and cost-effective way to get out for some great diving.
A well-planned dive getaway close to home can feel just as rewarding as a big international trip—without the hefty price tag. Look for all-inclusive trips that cover multiple dives, equipment rental (if needed), and transportation.
Save on Air with an Annual Air Pass or Air Fill Card
If you’re diving frequently, an Annual Air Pass is one of the best investments you can make. Instead of paying per fill, you pay upfront for unlimited or discounted air throughout the year. The math is simple: if you dive enough, you’ll save significantly compared to paying for each fill individually.
For divers who aren’t sure if they’ll use enough fills for an annual pass, an Air Fill Card is a great alternative. You get 10 air fills for the price of 8, reducing your per-fill cost while keeping things flexible. If you are interested in other multi-month arrangements (3-month, 6-month, etc) get in touch and we’ll assist however we can.
Look For Deals on Gear (and Sell What You Don’t Need)
Shopping smart means knowing where to find deals and how to sell or trade the gear you no longer need.
- Check out sales and clearance sections—discounts on last-season models can mean big savings without sacrificing quality.
- Consider well-maintained used gear—some items, like fins, wetsuits, and dive bags, hold up well over time and can be great finds at a fraction of the price.
- Sell or trade old gear—platforms like Facebook Marketplace, dive shop gear swaps, or local dive communities can help you get value back from equipment you no longer need.
Investing in quality used gear or taking advantage of seasonal discounts can make a huge difference, especially when gearing up for a new season.
